Il sostantivo abitualmente usato per indicare capi d'abbigliamento e vestiti in generale è clothes (sempre al plurale), non dresses: That shop sells lovely clothes, quel negozio ha bei vestiti (non That shop sells lovely dresses). Invece dress indica generalmente un abito intero da donna: I'll wear my new black dress, mi metterò il mio vestito nero nuovo. Inoltre, dress può riferirsi a un particolare tipo di tenuta: fancy dress, costume (in maschera); formal dress, vestiario formale.
